Famous Door County Cherries

Door County is well known for the thousands of acres of cherry trees throughout the county.  Travelers flock to the county in May to witness hillsides of beautiful white cherry blossoms.  Mid-July is time for cherry harvesting.  At Wienke's Market you'll be able to find already picked cherries available by the quart or pail.  Dried, canned and frozen are available all year 'round.  But don't forget Wienke's Market Door County Cherry Pies, cherry muffins, cherry scones, cherry jams, and cherry pie filling.  We even offer Cherry Cheddar Cheese, Cherry Brats and Cherry Summer Sausage.  We'll put cherries in about anything!  If you have an idea for a cherry product, please contact us!

Cherry Fun Facts!
  • Wisconsin Ranks fourth in producing cherries in the US, and all of those are grown in Door County!
  • There are about 7,000 cherries on an average tart cherry tree (depending on age of tree, weather, etc), and it takes about 250 cherries to make a cherry pie, so each tree has a potential producing enough cherries for 28 pies!
  • The average US citizen consumes about one pound of tart cherries per year.  That's more than 260 million pounds per year.

Montmorency tart cherries are gaining more recognition now for more than just delicious cherry pies, on-going research from Michigan State University shows that cherries are a rich source of antioxidants that can help fight cancer and heart disease.  Check out the 2 brochures below for additional information on the health benefits of tart cherries.
